Grades 4 – 6 Course Descriptions

Please note the grade level for each class next to the title of the course — NOT all courses on this page are available for the entire grade range covered. Some classes span a wide range of ages.

Parents, please use discretion when making your selections as to what would be the best fit for your child’s maturity level. If you have any questions, please contact the Board and we can help you determine the best fit.

BLOCK 1 COURSES: 10am – 11am

Grossology (Gr. 4-6)

Curious about boogers? Interested in brains? Want to know more about bumps, blood and bruises? If so, this class of or you. Join us on our journey through the book series Grossology and learn some icky, oozy information about your amazing body.

On Hands-on days, we will be exploring specimens that are already dissected. Students will not be using scalpels in this class. Latex gloves will be provided.

Girls’ Volleyball (Gr. 4+)

volleyball skills and drills class that focuses on mastering core techniques like serving, passing, setting, attacking (spiking), blocking, and digging, using drills, coach feedback, and games to build player confidence and court application, suitable for beginners to intermediate players looking to improve individual fundamentals and team play.

Brick Engineering (K+)

In this hands-on engineering class, students will use bricks to explore how the world works through building and experimentation. Each week, learners construct models that introduce real STEM concepts such as force, motion, friction, energy, and simple machines. Students test their builds, make predictions, solve challenges, and learn to think like young engineers. Perfect for brick builders who love to explore how things work!  All ages are welcome.

Please note – there is no programming / coding in this series.

Sewing: Beginner (Gr. 2+)

Learn beginner sewing techniques with Miss Mimi! This is for students with an interest in sewing but do not have any previous experience.

BLOCK 2 COURSES: 11am – 12noon

Line Dancing (Gr. 4+)

Get ready to step, stomp, and slide! In this fun and energetic 10-week elective, students in grades 4–12 will learn the basics of country line dancing while building rhythm, confidence, and teamwork. Each week introduces a new beginner-friendly line dance using popular, age-appropriate country songs. Students will practice counting beats, recognizing patterns, and moving in sync with a group—all while getting plenty of exercise and having a blast!

No dance experience is needed. We start with simple steps and gradually build up to full routines. Throughout the course, students will learn a variety of classic and modern line dances and even get the chance to vote on a class favorite for the final showcase. By the end of the session, dancers will be able to perform multiple complete line dances and feel confident joining any dance floor.

We Do Robotics (Gr. K-6)

Students will explore engineering and coding using the LEGO WeDo system. Each week, learners build motorized LEGO models and use block-based coding to make the models move, react, and solve challenges. We’ll work with motors, sensors, and simple machines while strengthening creativity, teamwork, and problem-solving skills.

Perfect for curious builders—no experience needed! Perfect for ages 5-11

Art (Gr. 4+)

Students will work on a variety of art projects including watercolor and pencil techniques, using a variety of mediums from traditional paper, cardboard and clay to found objects and textiles. The syllabus is flexible and may change as the semester progresses to better reflect the whims of the group.

Students may also have the opportunity to work with students in our Digital Basics class to create digital graphics and merch for a mock business, if the students of both classes are cooperative and able to meet this challenge.

The pre-requisite for this class is a genuine interest in art.

Sewing: Intermediate (Gr. 3+)

Learn to sew with Miss Mimi! This is an intermediate sewing course for students who know how to use a sewing machine. Students in this class will learn to use a serger – sew and finish seams accurately and quickly! These skills will elevate the students sewing skills allowing them to complete projects like a pro!

The pre-requisite for this class is Miss Mimi’s Beginner Sewing class or relevant experience.

BLOCK 3 COURSES: 1pm – 2pm

Great Escape (Gr. 4-6)

In this 10-week class, students will tackle a brand-new escape room challenge each week. Each room is filled with puzzles, riddles, clues, and teamwork-based missions that stretch their reading, writing, problem-solving, and math skills. From decoding story-based clues to solving number puzzles, every escape brings a fresh theme, a fun mystery, and a new adventure.

Novel Study (Gr. 4-12)

Because of Winn-Dixie by Kate DiCamillo and Charlie and the Chocolate Factory by Roald Dahl are two unforgettable stories— and this combined novel study set brings both to life in your homeschool. Each study includes thoughtful comprehension questions, vocabulary building, and grammar-infused copywork, along with engaging writing exercises that help your child connect deeply with characters, themes, and rich literary worlds.

Students will receive a copy of the book, included in the class fee.

Lego Builders (K-3)

Lego Builders class, where imagination meets hands-on fun! Young builders will explore the endless possibilities of Lego bricks as they design, build, and invent their own creations each week. Students will learn basic building techniques, experiment with color and structure, and solve fun engineering challenges like building the tallest tower, designing a speedy LEGO vehicle, or creating a tiny town with their friends. They’ll also have the chance to work together on group builds, helping them practice teamwork and communication while bringing big ideas to life.

Sewing: Bag Making (Gr. 3+)

Join Miss Mimi for a new Bag Makers Class! Students will create a Hannah’s Sling purse using a class kit as well as other smaller kits. This class is an opportunity for students to show off their sewing skills and complete a functional sling bag. Skills Taught: Zipper Installation, Bias Binding Application, Effective Interfacing, Gussets, Webbing, Bag Hardware.

*Prerequisite: students must be advanced, experienced sewers and have competent sewing machine skills that include troubleshooting machine mechanics.

BLOCK 3 COURSES: 2pm – 3pm

Guild Rehearsals: NLHG Presents ‘The Easter Story’ (Gr. K+)

In this course, everyone will come together to create, rehearse and perform a “shadow tableau” presentation of The Easter Story. The performance will be a combination of shadow play / puppetry, and tableau style drama. Roles will be found for everyone: tableau actors, props, sound effects, lighting, writing, narration, music, and direction.

We will perform our version of The Easter Story at a showcase event at the end of the semester on April 11 to raise funds for the co-op. Because this class is part of a fundraiser, there will be no charge to participate.

Pre-K and K students can join this class with as long as a parent attends the class with them.
